Community Service

Various organizations and communities are challenged on a daily basis - trying to obtain the resources they need to help people and further their cause. As we know, all around the world, and in our own backyard, some less fortunate residents are also challenged. They often lead a life that not many can relate to and it is a challenge for them to receive the emotional, physical and financial help they need to get through the day.

To help those in need tackle their everyday challenges, the Association of Legal Administrators (ALA) encourages ALA chapters, its members, firms, business partners, relatives and friends to come together to contribute time, energy and resources toward improving their own communities throughout the year.

One of the strengths of the First State Chapter is the generosity of its members and business partners. The First State Chapter is happy to share our stories and opportunities for giving back!

Each year, the First State Chapter visits St. Michael’s School in Wilmington to treat the children to Easter egg dyeing and an Easter egg hunt, and a special visit by the Easter Bunny. Hundreds of eggs are filled with treats, hidden by our volunteers, and then sought out by eager little ones from ages 2 - 7. Hearing the laughter from these children is such a rewarding experience (while we admit, hearing a few cries from the smaller kiddies is a bit heart-breaking).

Another wonderful project that kicked off several years ago is the annual summer Business Partner event which has been paired with a charitable community project. Over the years, we have collected items for various wonderful recipients, a few which include: Kay’s Kamp (a beautiful camp focused on children with cancer); The Clothing Bank of Delaware (clothing drive to assist those in need to prepare for job interviews); Operation Warm (coats for children in our community); Faithful Friends (pet drive); Build-a-Bear drive (stuffed teddy bears for children at A.I. DuPont) and many more!

When the Fall/Winter season approaches, the First State Chapter conducts our Annual Food Drive to benefit the Emmanuel Dining Room, restocking their pantry as well as filling Thanksgiving Baskets for those in need. With the participation of many local law firms, and the donation of time and effort from Blue Marble to pick-up and deliver the boxes of goods, the First State Chapter collects and donates, on average, 60-70 large boxes of non-perishable goods. Our volunteers also donate their time at Emmanuel Dining Room with sign-ups for the Adopt-A-Child program. In the Season of Giving, these projects have become staples in our First State Chapter schedule.

Annually, in October, the First State Chapter also hosts a Children’s Halloween Party at Emmanuel Dining Room. Members and business partners volunteer, creating an evening of scary fun, filled with goodies, crafts and memory-making for children and their families in this community. Many of these children might not otherwise get to enjoy Halloween festivities. We are thrilled to be able to make this event happen each year!

The First State Chapter welcomes support from members and business partners and we look forward to continuously giving back to our community. If you would like to participate in any of our community service projects, please contact Bill McCall, Social Committee Chair, at mccall@rlf.com.
